The holiday season is a time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. However, it can also be a time when health & fitness routines takes a back seat. The good news is, there are plenty of ways to stay active during the holiday period, and it doesn’t have to be a chore.

In this blog post, we’ll explore some helpful tips to stay active over the holidays.

1. Make a plan

One of the best ways to stay active during the holidays is to make a plan or schedule. This can be as simple as setting aside some time each day for physical activity. Make a schedule and stick to it – this doesn’t have to be a vigorous routine, it can be as simple as walking 20-30mins every other day. You get to decide! So pick some activity that will suit your holiday schedule.

2. Getting outdoors

The holiday period is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors. Go for a light walk, hike, or bike ride with friends and family. This is a great way to stay active while spending time with loved ones. Plus, it’s an opportunity to explore new places and enjoy the fresh air. If you’re new to outdoor exercise, start small with a park walk!

3. Try something new

The holiday period is a great time to try something new. Take a dance class, try yoga, or join a new fitness class. Trying something new can help keep your workouts interesting and appropriately challenging for your fitness level.

4. Keep it simple

Staying active during the holidays doesn’t have to be complicated. There are plenty of simple activities you can do to stay active. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park further away from the store, or take a short walk after meals. These small changes can add up over time and help keep you active over the holidays.

5. Involve friends and family

Staying active with friends and family is a great way to make physical activity more enjoyable. Plan a group activity, like a game of soccer, back yard cricket or a hike. This is a great way to stay active while spending time with loved ones.

6. Start where you can start

Start where you can start! This sounds like a silly one, but after working with hundreds of individuals better their lives, I have found it to the best single piece of advice I can give, especially if you’re new to exercise or a particularly behaviour/activity.

Trying to keep up with others who have exercised for longer or are significantly fitter than you can be challenging, and increases the risk of not sustaining exercise.

Some health competition is great, but if you find yourself constantly unable to keep up – re-evaluating your exercise intensity might be needed.

Start at your level and increase from there gradually. This allows you to maintain a healthy & sustainable exercise routine.

By no means are we encouraging you to aim low, but consider, when moving mountains, one begins by carrying away small stones.

Summary

Staying active over the holiday period is important for your overall health and well-being. Try using these helpful tips, to help you stay active and enjoy the holiday season. Remember to make a plan, get outdoors, stay hydrated, try something new, keep it simple, involve friends and family, and stay consistent.
